Australia has dismantled 14,000 fraud cases since 2023 — 21% of which are fake cryptocurrency.
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission ( ASIC ) is expanding its campaign against spear phishing after removing 14,000 cases since July 2023, over 3,000 of which were related to cryptocurrency. Common tricks include impersonating AI trading bots, fake websites, advertisements on social media, and "fake" news accompanied by AI images.
In the first half of 2025, global losses from hacks and spear phishing in cryptocurrency reached $2.47 billion, a slight increase compared to 2024. In Australia, investment scams still cause the largest losses but are on a downward trend: from $291 million (2023) down to $192 million (2024) and $73 million from the beginning of 2025.
In addition, authorities have also increased monitoring of cryptocurrency ATMs, which are suspected of being involved in many scams. Australia currently has nearly 2,000 crypto ATMs and has recorded more than 150 fraud cases through this channel with damages exceeding 2 million USD.
