Zelensky: Only face-to-face talks with Putin can bring peace.
Jin10 reported on May 13 that Ukrainian President Zelensky said on Tuesday that he hopes to negotiate a conditional 30-day ceasefire face-to-face with Putin in Istanbul this Thursday, as only he has the authority to implement the ceasefire. He stated, "Everything in Russia depends on Putin, so the only way to ensure a ceasefire and end the war is to have a direct dialogue with him. If he takes this step and indicates that he is ready for a ceasefire, it will open the way for discussing all the elements to end the war." Zelensky accused Putin of being "afraid" to meet with him and indicated that if negotiations do not proceed, he expects the U.S. and EU to impose "severe sanctions," adding that a failed meeting would indicate that Russia is not yet ready for diplomatic talks. In addition, Zelensky mentioned that he has invited Trump to the meeting on Thursday, but Trump has not yet confirmed his attendance.
