On April 18, the Trump administration is seeking to transfer California Governor Newsom's legal challenge to the U.S. tariff program from federal court in San Francisco to the New York Court of International Trade. Attorneys for the U.S. Department of Justice filed a request on Thursday to move the case away from Newsom's turf, arguing that the trade tribunal has "exclusive jurisdiction" over tariff-related disputes. The Democratic governor of the most populous state is seen as a potential presidential candidate for 2028. On Wednesday, Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta indicted the president. They are trying to stop Trump from using his emergency powers to impose broad tariffs on Mexico, Canada and other countries. Newsom and Bonta cited harm to California's consumers and businesses, including agriculture and the entertainment industry. In terms of economic aggregate, California can be considered the "fifth largest economy in the world". Trump's tariffs face at least three other legal challenges, two of which were filed by conservative legal advocacy groups representing small businesses, and the third by members of Montana's Blackfoot.
