In the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, the son of the deputy principal mined at least 1 million rubles in a school utility room. His mother was accused of abusing her official powers and the case was sent to court, reported the regional prosecutor's office.

The former deputy director of the public school installed cryptocurrency mining equipment in the school's utility room. She did this at the request of her son.

The investigation established that since January 2023, the miner earned at least 1 million rubles using this equipment. This money was withdrawn to his account, according to the report.

The damage to the school from the illegal use of electricity by mining equipment amounted to 680,000 rubles. The accused reimbursed this amount during the investigation stage. The criminal case under Article 285 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation is now sent to court for examination on the merits.

A month earlier, a mining farm was discovered in a building of a former boarding school in the Irkutsk region. In this case, the court ruled for the dismantling of the equipment and the cessation of the non-target use of the land.

All legal entities and individual entrepreneurs in Russia that mine cryptocurrency are required to register in a special registry of the Federal Tax Service (FNS). Individuals do not need to do this if they are mining using electricity not exceeding 6,000 kWh per month.

According to the Federal Tax Service as of April 1, 606 miners registered with the agency in 5 months. The most popular regions for cryptocurrency mining became Krasnoyarsk Krai, Irkutsk Oblast, and Tatarstan.
