OpenAI launches the killer browser ChatGPT Atlas based on artificial intelligence.
OpenAI has announced the launch of its new browser ChatGPT Atlas, an innovative product that redefines the web browsing experience. It is currently live on the macOS platform and will also be available on Windows, iOS, and Android in the future. Sam Altman, Will Ellsworth, Adam Fry, Ben Goodger, Ryan O’Rouke, Justin Rushing, and Pranav Vishnu first revealed the browser concept and features on the OpenAI YouTube channel. Below are the key points of the introduction.
Redefine the way of using the browser
The ChatGPT Atlas released by OpenAI redefines the way users search the web and their habits. For years, browsers have remained almost stagnant in traditional architecture, with the address bar, search box, bookmarks, and tab pages all relying on long-standing designs. The birth of Atlas stems from a simple idea: what would the experience be like if you could converse directly with the browser? The core of Atlas is ChatGPT, which is not just a browser with an added AI chat feature, but is designed from the ground up to focus on conversation, allowing users to browse, ask questions, and understand web content simultaneously, even letting AI assist with specific tasks. It's like a companion during the browsing process, always appearing when you need it. Ben Goodger leads the engineering work for Atlas. He mentioned that Atlas is not just a chat entry point, but rather makes ChatGPT the core functionality of the entire browser. This design fosters greater curiosity among users and encourages them to explore the web world more. Atlas retains familiar features for users: tab pages, bookmarks, password management, fast loading speeds, etc., while also incorporating several innovative features from OpenAI.
Browsing while chatting in real-time
First is instant messaging. When writing emails, looking up information, or reading articles, there's no need to switch between tabs to copy and paste; just ask directly, and the AI will understand the context and provide corresponding assistance. Next is the memory function. This feature continues to help ChatGPT gradually understand what the user wants to do, remembering previously searched content, preferred styles of information, and even being able to search past web history to help retrieve lost content.
AI Assistant Function
The ChatGPT Atlas agent function not only answers questions but can also take proactive actions. For example, it can book flights, edit documents, submit forms, or create a grocery list for cooking, among other tasks. You just need to express your needs, and it will execute the specific steps for you. The homepage design continues the traditional browser interface, making it easy to use as soon as you open it. In the center is a chat input box, while the right side integrates tools, model selection, and history records.
Using movie reviews as an example, it demonstrates the convenience of semantic input; there is no need to enter exact URLs, just describe your intent, and Atlas can take you there. You can also use natural language to search for past web pages, such as asking “Find the document related to the core design of Atlas from before,” and the system will search and open the Google document you browsed previously. The homepage will also proactively recommend news, work items, or tasks that may interest you based on usage patterns, and these suggestions will become more aligned with personal needs as the user interacts more.
User and AI generate actual real-time interaction
Ryan also showcased a particularly useful feature: sidebar chat. Whether viewing GitHub, news, or other websites, simply clicking “Ask ChatGPT” opens the sidebar, allowing for analysis, summarization, or inquiries about the web content. For instance, when reading code diffs, Atlas can help summarize the changes, determine whether it's suitable for merging into the product version, and even assist with modifications. This experience of browsing while chatting allows users to not just read information but also interact with it. Ryan mentioned that he often opens ChatGPT while using the browser to help organize, explain, or even provide suggestions.
The search experience of Atlas is also different from traditional ones. When you enter search content, it not only provides direct answers but also displays rich formatted results such as images, videos, and news, while maintaining conversational interaction. You can ask ChatGPT to help you compare information, read reviews, or even summarize the article's content in one sentence, like when a user just gives an image of a dish and asks the browser how to make it, ChatGPT will list the ingredients and methods, and can even help suggest a shopping list.
No need to copy and paste Gmail draft emails, directly update the email content.
Ryan demonstrated a common process: drafting a Gmail email. In the past, it might have required copying text into ChatGPT to make adjustments and then copying it back. Now, you can directly select text in the email, click the ChatGPT button, and ask it to refine your sentences, modify the tone, or proofread. After the modifications are completed, just click “Update,” and the original text will be replaced with the new content, without needing to switch windows. This feature is called “Cursor Chat,” allowing AI to seamlessly integrate into workflows without interrupting the thought process.
Will, Justin, and Pranav showcased multiple application scenarios of AI agent functionalities, allowing Atlas to automatically complete tasks. The agent mode of Atlas is not just about understanding, but truly participating in operations, capable of manipulating the browser, clicking on web pages, filling out forms, and switching tabs. Atlas is not only a functional innovation but also responds to people's imagination about the role AI assistants can play in daily life. From browsing information, writing emails, searching for data, to proactively completing tasks, Atlas provides new ways to make web usage more natural, smoother, and more aligned with users' actual needs. Atlas is now available for macOS users, with Windows, iOS, and Android platforms coming soon.
