Trump Ends Trade Talks With Canada — Crypto Markets Brace for Turbulence

The crypto market is preparing for heightened volatility after U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly terminated all trade negotiations with Canada, escalating tensions just months before a scheduled review of the U.S.–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA). The decision comes as part of Trump’s ongoing push for aggressive tariff policies across North America and beyond.

“All Talks Are Over,” Says Trump In a late-night post on Truth Social, President Trump accused Canada of running a “fraudulent and manipulative” ad campaign featuring former U.S. President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs. “TARIFFS ARE CRITICAL TO AMERICA’S NATIONAL SECURITY AND ECONOMIC STRENGTH,” Trump wrote.

“BASED ON THEIR BEHAVIOR, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.” The ad, which aired on U.S. networks including Newsmax and Bloomberg, was reportedly funded by the Ontario government at a cost of $53.5 million. It used a 1987 Reagan speech warning about the dangers of tariffs — a move Trump described as a “disgraceful propaganda stunt.”

Ottawa’s Conciliatory Approach Backfires Ironically, the decision came just weeks after Canada announced plans to lift several retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods in an attempt to ease trade tensions ahead of the USMCA review.

The proposed adjustment would have removed a 25% tariff on various U.S. consumer goods, signaling Ottawa’s willingness to reset relations. Instead, Trump’s move erases months of diplomatic progress, reigniting fears of a renewed North American trade rift. Market strategists warn that the fallout could intensify volatility across both traditional and crypto markets, particularly as investors interpret the move as a sign of growing U.S. protectionism.

Trump Tariffs Ripple Beyond North America The rift with Canada is just the latest addition to a widening web of Trump tariffs. Since August, the U.S. has imposed duties ranging from 10% to 50% on imports from more than 60 countries, targeting key trade partners like China, Mexico, and the European Union. These aggressive measures have already rattled global markets — and the crypto sector has not been spared.

Earlier this month, renewed trade tensions with China triggered a sharp sell-off in Bitcoin and altcoins, wiping out billions in market capitalization within hours.

Possible Relief on the Horizon: Trump–Xi Meeting Despite the growing strain, there may be a glimmer of hope for investors.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Trump and China’s President Xi are scheduled to meet later this month in Washington — marking the first in-person dialogue since Trump’s return to office. Analysts believe the summit could yield a temporary de-escalation in trade tensions, offering short-term relief to risk assets such as cryptocurrencies. According to Bloomberg Economics, there is now an 80% probability that the U.S. and China will reach a preliminary trade agreement by November 10, potentially easing market anxiety ahead of the year-end.

Market Outlook 🔹 The termination of U.S.–Canada talks raises fresh uncertainty for North American trade stability.

🔹 Tariff volatility remains a key driver of crypto market swings.

🔹 The Trump–Xi summit is now viewed as a crucial event for risk sentiment in November.

As one analyst put it: “When tariffs move, Bitcoin moves. Markets are learning to price in Trump’s unpredictability.”
