Ripple Chief Jokes: I’d Rather Not Tell My Younger Self to Buy XRP

In a crypto world where everyone dreams of going back in time to buy Bitcoin for a few dollars, Ripple’s Chief Technology Officer, David Schwartz, offered a philosophical (and quite funny) twist.

When asked what three words he’d tell his younger self, Schwartz replied: “Buy Bitcoin, not XRP” — joking that giving the opposite advice might “trigger a paradox.”

It all started with a simple question The question came from the crypto community reacting to a post that asked: “What would you tell your 18-year-old self — in three words?” While most people replied with things like “Buy more crypto” or “Stick to Ethereum”, Schwartz responded with humor — but also a touch of self-reflection on his past choices.

Why Schwartz would pick Bitcoin over XRP From a pure investment standpoint, it makes sense.

If his younger self had spent $39,000 on XRP back in 2014, when it traded at $0.0028 per token, he’d hold about 13.9 million XRP today — worth around $36 million.

Sounds impressive, but Bitcoin would have yielded an even higher return over the same period. Still, some Ripple fans raised eyebrows: “What about XRP? You’re the CTO of Ripple!”

When work meets investment Schwartz previously admitted he chose Ripple Labs stock instead of buying XRP tokens.

With hindsight, he now questions that decision — joking that XRP would have been more liquid and easier to sell than company shares. And why wouldn’t he tell his younger self to buy XRP? “Because it’s too closely tied to my work,” he said with a grin. “If I tried to tell myself about it, I might trigger a time paradox.”
