Vitalik Buterin: L2 is an extension of Ethereum's culture
Vitalik Buterin expressed in his post that L2 is an extension of Ethereum's culture, because Ethereum is an ecosystem centered around layer2, where you can freely build an independent sub-ecosystem with unique functionality, while also being part of the larger Ethereum ecosystem. This sub-ecosystem is equivalent to a subculture branch of Ethereum.
Researcher Paul Dylan-Ennis has spent a lot of time exploring and understanding the subcultures of Ethereum. He identified three main subcultures in Ethereum as follows:
1. Cypherpunk: Cypherpunks are committed to open source development and a certain DIY or punk attitude. In the case of Ethereum, Cypherpunks have built infrastructure and tools, but remain neutral about their usage. Historically, Cypherpunks have emphasized privacy, but in Ethereum, it is not always given top priority, although a new Cypherpunk movement called Lunarpunk has emerged, advocating for prioritizing and centralizing privacy.
2、Regens: Many influential voices within Ethereum are committed to building technology in a regenerative or regenerative manner. Rooted in Vitalik Buterin's interest in politics and social science, many regenerators have participated in governance experiments aimed at revitalizing, improving, or even replacing contemporary systems. The hallmark of this subculture is its experimental nature and interest in public goods.
3. Degens: Users who are driven purely by speculation and accumulating wealth at all costs, i.e., Degens. The Degens are financial nihilists who focus on current trends and hype to get lucky and escape the rat race of contemporary neoliberal capitalism. Degens often take extraordinary risks, but in an ironic, almost detached way.
