The dark side of the data age

The development of modern technology has brought us convenience, but at the same time, it has exposed some concerning issues. This year's 3.15 Gala revealed multiple cases of infringing on consumer rights through digital means, which is chilling.

Typical cases related to data infringement include the following:

  1. Illegal collection of facial data: During facial recognition payment, personal facial information is collected without authorization.
  2. Personal resume information leakage: The resume information submitted by job seekers on recruitment platforms is subject to illegal trading.
  3. Security risks of smartphones for the elderly: Some software obtains user data through various means.

These cases indicate that as times progress, the methods used by criminals are constantly evolving. From previously selling substandard products to now quietly trading personal privacy data, the ways in which consumer rights are infringed upon have become more covert and dangerous.

In cases of facial recognition abuse, many well-known brand stores have installed facial recognition systems. These systems can not only capture facial information and generate numbers without the customer's knowledge, but also determine the customer's emotional state through intelligent analysis. This seriously violates personal information security regulations, as it is necessary to obtain explicit authorization from the information subject when collecting sensitive information such as biometric features.

What is even more concerning is that once this unauthorized collected facial information is leaked onto the black market, it could be used for illegal purposes, with unimaginable consequences.

During the job search process, we often submit resumes containing real personal information to recruitment platforms. However, some platforms actually sell users' identity information to third parties, completely contradicting their stated commitment of "treating user data security as a matter of life and death."

These events remind us that while enjoying the convenience of technology, we must also remain vigilant and protect our personal privacy. Relevant departments should strengthen supervision, impose severe penalties for illegal activities, and effectively safeguard consumers' legal rights.
