When Bitcoin Became a Weapon: The Dark Side of Crypto Ransom

A Toronto kidnapping case just wrapped up with a sobering verdict—13 years for the ringleader Keyron Moore. But here’s what caught attention: the $1M Bitcoin ransom demand in 2022.

The victim (A.T.) was dragged at gunpoint from Thornhill and subjected to brutal torture, burns, and sexual assault. The kidnappers forced him to pay in BTC—a deliberate choice. Why? Because they thought crypto was untraceable. Classic criminal playbook.

A.T. managed to escape and tipped off police. Moore’s now locked down for over a decade (already served 3 years). A minor accomplice (S.M.) is awaiting sentencing on October 3.

What this tells us:

  • Bitcoin doesn’t make you invisible—law enforcement traced the transaction
  • Criminals using crypto for ransom are still getting caught
  • The dark web playbook isn’t as bulletproof as it seems

It’s a grim reminder that while crypto offers privacy, it’s not a get-out-of-jail-free card. The ransom demand actually became evidence. Justice served.
