Walrus also known by its token symbol WAL is a new kind of blockchain project that focuses on storing large files and data in a way that does not rely on a single company or central server like traditional storage services do instead it spreads pieces of data across many computers called nodes making the system more open and resistant to failure and censorship by using a special method called erasure coding Walrus breaks big files into small coded parts and places them on many machines so even if some go offline the data can still be rebuilt and accessed this makes storing videos images or huge datasets much cheaper and more efficient than older decentralized storage networks and ties the storage activity to the Sui blockchain which keeps track of storage proofs and payments through smart contracts creating a verifiable record of where and how data is kept
The WAL token is at the center of how the Walrus network works people use it to pay for storage services stake it to help secure the network and take part in decisions about how the system should evolve WAL also plays a role in governance where holders influence upgrades and network rules and staking gives users rewards as a way to encourage long term support for the project with a total supply capped at five billion tokens designed to promote stability and participation early users earned WAL through testnet activities and community events with some receiving large distributions in airdrops and now WAL is traded on exchanges and continues to grow as more developers and projects look for decentralized ways to handle data storage needs
