BNB Chain recently completed the Fermi hard fork upgrade, and this update has a significant impact. The block generation time was cut from 0.75 seconds to 0.45 seconds, which means the speed has almost doubled. The most noticeable change you can feel is—faster transaction confirmations, and during peak times, the chain no longer stalls when running operations. The experience of transferring assets and calling smart contracts has been significantly improved.
This upgrade is actually paving the way for bigger moves later this year. According to Nina Rong, the Executive Director of BNB Chain Growth, in 2026 they plan to develop the next-generation transaction chain, with core goals of achieving transaction confirmation in seconds, supporting high throughput, and enabling hybrid computing between on-chain and off-chain. In simple terms, they want to allow developers more flexibility to choose and build applications while maintaining decentralization and security.
From a performance perspective, this Fermi hard fork has propelled BNB Chain into the top five fastest public blockchains globally—chains with a block time under one second are indeed rare. Comparing with others, Solana is a tough competitor, with transaction costs as low as $0.0038. BNB Chain’s current challenge is to maintain its speed advantage while continuing to optimize costs, delivering competitiveness on both dimensions.
