On January 30th, local time, UN Secretary-General Guterres warned that due to the continuous accumulation of unpaid dues, the United Nations’ funds could be exhausted before July. This global organization is facing an “imminent financial collapse.”

In a letter to the permanent representatives of member states, Guterres wrote: “This crisis is deepening, threatening program implementation and posing a risk of financial collapse. Moreover, the situation will further deteriorate in the near future.”

Guterres pointed out in the letter that either all member states fully and on time fulfill their payment obligations, or member states must fundamentally reform financial rules to prevent an imminent financial collapse.

Currently, the United States is the largest debtor among UN member states. The UN has stated that since U.S. President Trump took office in January last year, the U.S. has almost stopped paying its dues, and as of now, there are unpaid dues for 2024. In January, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq confirmed that the U.S. has not yet paid its overdue dues to the UN.
