This morning, Alibaba CEO Wu Yongming responded internally regarding Lin Junyang’s departure. He stated that the company will continue to adhere to its open-source model strategy, increase investment in AI research and development, and attract top talent.

The full email is as follows:

Dear Tongyi Laboratory colleagues,

The company has approved Lin Junyang’s resignation. We thank Lin Junyang for his contributions during his tenure. Jingren will continue to lead Tongyi Laboratory to advance subsequent work. At the same time, the company will establish a foundational model support team, which will be coordinated by myself, Jingren, and Fan Yu to support the development of foundational models.

Technological progress is essential; stagnation means regression. Developing large foundational models is a key strategic focus for our future. While continuing to follow our open-source model strategy, we will also keep increasing investment in AI R&D and efforts to attract outstanding talent. Let’s work together.

Wu Yongming
