Applied Materials has agreed to pay $252 million to settle allegations from the U.S. Department of Commerce regarding illegal exports of semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China. The company was accused of 56 violations of export regulations, totaling about $126 million in equipment re-exported or attempted to be re-exported to China’s top chipmaker, SMIC. This penalty marks the second-highest ever imposed by the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security.
