Accelerating Solid-State Battery Development: NIO Establishes New Battery Technology Company
Recently, NIO Battery Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “NIO Shanghai Battery Technology”) officially completed business registration. The company has a registered capital of 100 million RMB, fully owned by Shanghai NIO Automobile Co., Ltd., with Zeng Shizhe as the legal representative. As Vice President of NIO Battery Systems and the core person responsible for battery technology, Zeng Shizhe’s background highlights the company’s central role within NIO’s battery business system.
The registered address is located in Anting Town, Jiading District, Shanghai. The business term is indefinite. Its scope includes battery sales, electronic special materials R&D, new energy vehicle electrical accessories, intelligent power distribution and control equipment, among other fields. It is positioned as a hub for R&D, global trade, digitalization, and ecological services, forming efficient synergy with NIO’s existing battery operations.
Industry insiders see the establishment of NIO Shanghai Battery Technology not as an isolated business expansion but as an important move to deepen its focus on power batteries and improve industrial layout, marking a key step in NIO’s strategic deployment in the power battery sector.
Enhancing the Full Chain of Power Battery Layout
In recent years, the global new energy vehicle market has become increasingly competitive, with leading automakers investing heavily in the power battery sector. As the penetration rate of new energy vehicles continues to rise, market demands for battery performance are also escalating. Core indicators such as energy density, charging efficiency, safety, and cycle life have become industry focal points. Meanwhile, the stability and independence of the power battery supply chain are crucial for automakers to ensure capacity and control costs. Under this background, relying solely on external suppliers is no longer sufficient for long-term development. Autonomous development of power battery business and mastery of core technologies have become inevitable choices for top automakers.
Automotive industry analyst Zhai Qiang told Huaxia Times that the establishment of NIO Shanghai Battery Technology is an important strategic move to adapt to industry trends and strengthen core competitiveness. It also signifies an upgrade of NIO’s power battery business from “collaborative R&D” to “independent and controllable” development.
In fact, NIO’s layout in the power battery field did not start with the establishment of Shanghai Battery Technology in 2026. As early as October 2022, NIO established NIO Battery Technology (Anhui) Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “NIO Anhui Battery Technology”) with a registered capital of 2 billion RMB, wholly owned by NIO Holding Co., Ltd. The formation of the Shanghai company, together with the Anhui company, creates a “Shanghai R&D + Anhui manufacturing” dual-platform structure, building a comprehensive battery business system and further enhancing NIO’s layout in the power battery field.
As of December 31, 2025, NIO held 1,382 battery-related technological patents covering areas such as cell design, battery pack integration, thermal management systems, and battery recycling, forming a complete patent system.
In early 2026, NIO signed a five-year comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement with CATL (300750) in Hefei, Anhui. The two sides will collaborate deeply in technology, ecology, and market areas, including joint development of long-life batteries and battery swap technology, establishing swap standards and BaaS ecosystems, and promoting global brand joint marketing.
From the product definition stage, NIO has reserved multiple sourcing technical interfaces and compliance pathways. As early as 2020, some NIO models (such as ES6, ES8, EC6, ET7) listed multiple battery suppliers, including CATL, SVOLT, and Weilan New Energy, in their declaration announcements.
The establishment of NIO Shanghai Battery Technology will further integrate NIO’s R&D resources and industrial chain advantages, promoting technological iteration and industrialization of power batteries. According to NIO’s official information, the company will focus on R&D and commercialization of cutting-edge technologies such as solid-state batteries. NIO has already begun layout in solid-state batteries, collaborating with multiple industry companies and research institutions to explore various technical routes such as oxides and sulfides, aligning with industry development trends. As the next-generation power battery technology, solid-state batteries offer high energy density, safety, and fast charging, making them a key solution to address traditional liquid battery range anxiety and safety issues.
Accelerating Solid-State Battery R&D to Enhance Core Competitiveness
While advancing multiple technical routes such as oxides and sulfides, NIO has also set clear commercialization goals for this technological race. A NIO official told Huaxia Times, “Leveraging Shanghai’s R&D advantages, NIO aims to accelerate solid-state battery technology development, with the potential for large-scale application after 2027, further strengthening its core competitiveness in the power battery field.”
Zhai Qiang told Huaxia Times, “As NIO’s overseas markets expand, the demand for exporting power batteries and swap equipment continues to grow. Shanghai, as a major global trade hub, can provide convenient logistics and customs services for NIO’s battery products worldwide.”
He also noted, “From an industry perspective, NIO’s full-chain layout in power batteries not only enhances its own core competitiveness but also promotes coordinated development within the domestic power battery industry.”
According to GG Lithium Battery data, by 2025, the top five companies in China’s power battery industry (CR5) will hold 78.5% of the market share. Industry concentration continues to increase, but there is still significant room for collaboration and innovation between leading battery companies and automakers.
Through independent R&D and win-win cooperation, NIO promotes breakthroughs and applications in battery technology, driving coordinated development across upstream materials, midstream manufacturing, and downstream recycling. This enhances the overall competitiveness of China’s power battery industry.
The dual-platform layout of “Shanghai R&D + Anhui Manufacturing” also provides a model for other automakers to develop their power battery businesses, encouraging increased R&D investment, improved industrial chain layout, and high-quality development of the new energy vehicle industry.
However, industry insiders note that the power battery industry still faces challenges such as fluctuations in key material prices, rapid technological iteration, and overcapacity risks. NIO’s deployment in this field must address these common industry challenges through technological innovation, supply chain optimization, and capacity planning to achieve sustainable development.
The establishment of NIO Shanghai Battery Technology in 2026 marks a significant milestone in NIO’s power battery strategy, representing a solid step toward becoming a technology-driven enterprise.
Automotive analyst Han Hao believes, “With the dual-platform layout of ‘Shanghai R&D + Anhui Manufacturing,’ NIO has gradually improved its full-chain power battery deployment, forming unique advantages in core technology R&D, supply chain construction, and industrialization.”
He added, “Currently, the new energy vehicle industry is at a critical stage of high-quality development. Technological innovation and ecological collaboration are key trends. In the future, with continuous breakthroughs in NIO’s battery technology and the ongoing improvement of its swap ecosystem, it is expected to inject new momentum into the high-quality development of China’s new energy vehicle industry.”
