Odaily Planet Daily reports that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is currently negotiating with U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael, attempting to reach a compromise on contract terms for Pentagon use of Anthropic AI models.

The negotiations previously broke down last week. In an internal memo, Amodei stated that near the end of negotiations, the Department of Defense proposed removing a clause related to “bulk data analysis,” which is a key safeguard for Anthropic to prevent AI from being used for large-scale domestic surveillance. Anthropic’s red lines include prohibiting AI from being used for mass domestic surveillance and lethal autonomous weapons.

Amodei also mentioned in the memo that some statements from the Pentagon and OpenAI contain false information and implied that Anthropic is being marginalized because it did not praise Trump. Previously, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth threatened to list Anthropic as a supply chain risk, which would force companies in the military supply chain to cut ties with Anthropic. Last July, Anthropic received a $200 million contract from the U.S. Department of Defense, making it the first AI model used in classified environments and national security agencies. (FT)
