White House: The US and India reach a temporary agreement framework on trade
On February 6th local time, the White House issued a statement saying that the United States and India announced they have reached a provisional framework for mutually beneficial trade. The framework reaffirms both countries’ commitment to broader US-India bilateral trade negotiations. The agreement, initiated by U.S. President Trump and Indian Prime Minister Modi on February 13, 2025, will include more market access commitments. The statement said that the U.S. and India pledge to continue offering each other favorable market access in areas of mutual interest. Under the provisional agreement, India will eliminate or reduce tariffs on all U.S. industrial goods and a range of U.S. food and agricultural products. The U.S. will impose an “equivalent tariff” of 18% on goods originating from India, including textiles and apparel, leather and footwear, plastics and rubber, organic chemicals, home decor, handicrafts, and certain machinery.
