The U.S. government sues the University of California, Los Angeles
On the 24th, the U.S. government filed a lawsuit against the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), citing long-standing neglect of “antisemitism.” The U.S. Department of Justice alleges that UCLA has a persistent and “serious and widespread” problem with “antisemitism.” The complaint accuses university officials of “habitually ignoring” and “failing to report” employee complaints of “antisemitism” since the outbreak of a new round of Israeli-Palestinian conflict in October 2023, “turning a blind eye to serious antisemitic behavior — in some cases even condoning it.”
UCLA responded in a statement that “antisemitism” has no place on campus. The university has taken measures to enhance campus safety, enforce policies, and systematically and continuously combat “antisemitism.”
In August 2025, the Trump administration pressured UCLA to pay a $1 billion fine to settle federal charges of “antisemitism” and established a $172 million compensation fund to reimburse affected Jewish students. UCLA confirmed that approximately $584 million in federal funding had been frozen. A federal judge ordered the release of about $500 million of the frozen federal funds for UCLA in September 2025.
Including UCLA, the University of California system has 10 campuses, making it one of the top public university systems in the United States. After the Trump administration took office in January last year, it conducted a comprehensive review of alleged “antisemitism” at many universities, including Harvard and Columbia, demanding that these institutions eliminate “antisemitism,” abolish admissions policies favoring minorities, or face cuts or freezes in federal funding.
