How the world's wealthiest multiplied their wealth in 2025: a record of $2.2 trillion
The world’s wealthiest people closed 2025 with unprecedented growth in their assets. According to the billionaire index from a leading financial institution, the 500 wealthiest individuals on the planet increased their collective wealth by $2.2 trillion, reaching a total net worth of $11.9 trillion.
The megamarket boom boosted billionaires’ fortunes
This historic increase was not due to chance. Throughout 2025, all market segments experienced exceptional performance. From traditional stocks to cryptocurrencies, and precious metals, nearly all asset classes saw an unprecedented surge. Enthusiasm for artificial intelligence was especially influential, propelling major U.S. tech corporations to new valuation heights. This widespread market euphoria rapidly accelerated the value of these ultra-rich individuals’ assets, generating extraordinary gains.
Eight tycoons led global wealth growth
Within this overall prosperity, certain billionaires stood out even more. About a quarter of the total wealth increase came from just 8 people: Larry Ellison (Oracle), Elon Musk (Tesla), Larry Page (Alphabet), and Jeff Bezos (Amazon), along with other magnates. These four names represent the forefront of global technology and innovation, further solidifying their financial leadership in 2025.
Comparison: lower share of gains compared to 2024
However, there is an interesting nuance in these figures. Although these 8 billionaires contributed significantly, their share was smaller than in the previous year. In 2024, the same 8 ultra-rich accounted for 43% of the total gains recorded by the index. In 2025, while they still played a prominent role, their contribution was proportionally lower, suggesting a broader distribution of gains among the top 500 wealthiest individuals.
This pattern indicates that global wealth among the world’s richest is becoming more diversified, with new billionaires benefiting from the bullish markets of 2025. The combination of technological advances, cryptocurrency recovery, and appreciation of traditional assets created an ideal environment for the ultra-rich to amass unprecedented fortunes.
