Vanadium-Based Energy Storage Facility Reaches Full Operations in Xinjiang
China has achieved a significant technological milestone with the full-capacity activation of its largest vanadium energy storage installation. Located in Jimusaer County, Changji Prefecture of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Three Gorges Group’s facility represents a major advancement in long-duration energy storage technology deployment at scale. According to China Three Gorges Corporation announcements, the power station commenced full operational capacity on December 31, 2025.
Revolutionary Capacity for Grid-Scale Energy Management
The installation features an impressive rated capacity of 200,000 kilowatts paired with 1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity storage duration—making it the most substantial all-vanadium flow battery system currently operational in China. This scale of vanadium-based storage represents a transformative step for the nation’s renewable energy infrastructure. The technical specifications position this facility as a critical component in stabilizing grid operations while accommodating increasingly variable renewable generation sources.
Maximizing Solar Power Integration Through Advanced Vanadium Technology
The energy storage system operates in seamless coordination with adjacent photovoltaic generation facilities. During peak daylight hours when solar panels operate at maximum efficiency, the vanadium battery system captures excess electricity that grid infrastructure cannot immediately distribute. This stored energy becomes available for deployment during evening peak demand periods or cloudy weather conditions. The integration strategy significantly enhances the overall output utilization of the supporting photovoltaic power station by more than 10% annually.
Expanding Clean Energy Potential
The operational efficiency gains translate into substantial environmental benefits. Annual clean electricity generation is projected to increase by over 230 million kilowatt-hours through improved grid utilization and reduced curtailment of renewable sources. This breakthrough in vanadium energy storage technology demonstrates China’s capacity to solve the critical challenge of long-duration storage at utility scale, accelerating the nation’s transition toward renewable energy dominance and grid-level energy security.
