Christian Thompson's Vision: Sui Foundation is Building a Development Strategy for the Web3 Ecosystem in the Coming Years

Kristian Thompson, Managing Director of Sui Foundation, outlined an ambitious plan for the development of the blockchain industry, focusing on popularizing gaming applications and Web3 technologies. With his 30 years of experience in information security, including roles as Deputy Chief Security Officer at Meta and involvement in the Libra/Diem project, Thompson’s vision reflects a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the decentralized economy.

SuiPlay0X1: Revolutionary Console for Web3 Entertainment

The flagship product of Sui Foundation — the gaming console SuiPlay0X1 — is the world’s first attempt to create a specialized device for the blockchain gaming ecosystem. The product was unveiled at Korea Blockchain Week in September 2024 and generated significant market interest. Despite a price point of $599, the device received 7,000 pre-orders, demonstrating consumer demand for innovative solutions in the Web3 segment. Thompson views this step not as a breakthrough but as a logical progression in gradually integrating decentralized technologies into users’ daily lives.

South Korea as a Strategic Outpost for Expansion

Kristian Thompson highlighted South Korea as a key market for Sui Foundation’s global expansion. The active community of developers and entrepreneurs in the region has shown increased interest in cryptocurrency technologies and blockchain games, creating favorable conditions for innovation adoption. In this direction, Sui Foundation has formed strategic partnerships with South Korean companies NHN and Xociety, aimed at building a bridge between the traditional internet (Web2) and the decentralized network (Web3).

Technological Foundation: Libra Legacy in Sui Architecture

Thompson provided a detailed analysis of the historical significance of the Libra project, which he considers a logical conclusion. Despite Libra’s closure, its technological legacy has found application in Sui Foundation through the Move programming language. Originally developed to support large-scale networks capable of serving billions of users, Move remains at the core of Sui’s architecture today.

Web2 and Web3: Divergence or Convergence?

Kristian Thompson opposes the notion that Web3 will completely replace Web2. Instead, he proposes an alternative model of gradual merging of both paradigms in applications involving artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality, and robotics. According to Thompson, such integration will help address critical issues of modern internet: ensuring control over personal data, protecting medical records, and guaranteeing user independence from centralized platforms.

Regulatory Landscape and Global Expansion

Against the backdrop of evolving regulatory environments in the United States, where policies are shifting toward more transparent and inclusive regulation, Sui Foundation is expanding its presence in other regions. The company actively develops partnerships with the UAE, Vietnam, Greece, and African countries, leveraging local technological advantages and market potential to scale blockchain technologies. Kristian Thompson’s strategy envisions positioning Sui Foundation as a global player in the long term, adapting its solutions to the specific needs of each region.
