Middle East Situation | Indonesia's President Says US-Israel War with Iran Makes No Sense
Indonesian President Joko Widodo expressed surprise at the military actions by the United States and Israel in Iran, stating that he sees no “rationality” behind these actions.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Widodo said that Iran recently told him they are cautious about negotiating with the U.S. to end the war because they feel they have been “deceived twice.” He added that in an asymmetric war, “they can really only seek survival.”
Regarding the war, the 74-year-old Widodo said, “We all feel confused, I feel sad, and I think this war makes no sense.”
Widodo voluntarily offered to serve as a mediator. He has faced criticism in Indonesia for joining President Trump’s Peace Commission. Widodo stated that the plan to send peacekeeping troops to Gaza has now been put on hold.
Talking about the Peace Commission, Widodo said, “Every policy has pros and cons. If we are involved, we can still influence and work toward a lasting solution. We believe this solution is to establish an independent Palestine—two-state solution.”
