Wang Yi: Peace, cooperation, and friendship are the new narrative for the South China Sea
Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, March 8 — Chinese Foreign Minister and Politburo Member Wang Yi spoke about the South China Sea issue at the two sessions press conference.
Wang Yi said that the South China Sea is currently the busiest shipping route in the world, with the safest navigation and the most freedom of passage. Over the past year, cooperation in the South China Sea has maintained a good momentum. China has engaged in in-depth discussions on joint maritime development with Indonesia, held bilateral dialogues on maritime issues with Malaysia, and cooperated with Vietnam on sustainable fisheries development. Not long ago, Chinese coast guard ships successfully rescued more than ten Filipino crew members in distress in the South China Sea. This fully demonstrates that peace, cooperation, and friendship are the new narratives for the South China Sea. Stirring up trouble is unpopular, and creating conflicts has no market.
Wang Yi pointed out that to achieve long-term stability in the South China Sea, solid institutional guarantees are still needed. Based on the continued effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, consultations on the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea have entered a critical stage. All parties expect to complete these consultations within this year. China is confident and determined to work with all parties to eliminate interference, unify differences, and reach consensus as soon as possible, providing practical and effective “golden rules” to manage disputes, build mutual trust, and promote cooperation.
Wang Yi also expressed hope that during the Philippines’ tenure as ASEAN Chair this year, the country will recognize its responsibilities, not be misled by personal gains, demonstrate the necessary leadership, and play a positive role in promoting regional peace and stability.
