The Australian government announced that three more Iranian women’s football team members who previously held refugee visas and stayed in Australia have decided to return to their home country. In other words, out of the seven team members who initially chose to stay in Australia, only three remain.

Australian Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neill stated that after these three individuals informed Australian officials of their decision, there were multiple opportunities to discuss their choices and understand the context behind these difficult decisions. The three left Sydney on Saturday evening and traveled to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to reunite with other team members there.

According to Iranian media reports, the latest three to leave Australia include two players and one support staff member. The reports describe their return as a move back to the warm embrace of their families and homeland.
