Trump Calls NATO a "Paper Tiger"
On March 20th, local time, U.S. President Donald Trump harshly criticized NATO’s performance in dealing with Iran on his social media platform “Truth Social,” stating that “without the U.S., NATO is just a paper tiger.”
Trump said that NATO countries are unwilling to participate in military actions to contain “nuclear-armed Iran”; however, when the conflict has achieved military victory and the risks are lower, these countries instead complain about high oil prices caused by the situation.
Trump stated that the “only reason” for the current high oil prices is the failure to restore smooth shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and he described this as a “simple military operation” that NATO countries are unwilling to assist with. He also called these countries “cowardly” and emphasized that “the U.S. will remember.”
Recently, Trump has been urging European and other regional allies to participate in escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz and has complained that some allies are “not enthusiastic” about assisting the U.S. Trump earlier on the 17th posted on social media that most NATO allies have informed the U.S. they are unwilling to participate in military actions against Iran by the U.S. and Israel, and that the U.S. no longer needs help from NATO countries and others.
