Last night I repeatedly listened to Yu Donglai's livestream—three stories—until the middle of the night.
Only one feeling: this person truly understands life in this world.
Turns out enlightenment isn't found in remote mountains, it's in the people and situations you encounter every day.
1. Don't Be Stubborn
When young, he argued with his wife and stormed out. He ran into an old man collecting scrap materials eating a steamed bun. The old man took one look at his face and smiled: "Young man, you had a fight with your wife, didn't you?"
The old man said: "My wife and I argued for forty years. Later I understood—arguing is like two people carrying a log across a narrow bridge. Neither gives way, and the log ends up in the river. Only after it falls do you remember you were supposed to cross together."
His last words: "My wife passed away last year. Now I want to find someone to argue with, but I can't."
Yu Donglai went home and made his wife a bowl of noodles.
Fighting for who's right, winning the logic but losing the relationship—is it worth it?
Taking a step back isn't admitting defeat; it's knowing what matters.
2. An Open Heart
When young, a friend cheated him out of over 20,000 yuan (early 90s—could buy a house). So angry he couldn't eat, wanted to settle the score.
Met an old lady selling wontons at the night market. After hearing his story: "If you beat him up, can you get the money back?"
"Even if I can't get it back, at least I'd feel better."
"Then what after you feel better? Still do business? Still take care of your wife and kids?"
The old lady said: "I've been cheated too—worse than you. After crying for days, I figured it out: if he stole my money and I keep hating him, letting him steal my days too—that's the real loss."
Yu Donglai ate his wontons with tears falling into the bowl. Later he didn't go after him—not forgiveness, just refusing to let the other person steal any more of his days.
Hating someone costs too much. How many good days will it take to fill that pit?
3. Real Ability
Years ago, running a small tobacco and liquor shop, an elderly woman wanted to buy good wine but hesitated at the door, worried it might be fake.
Yu Donglai: "Ma'am, trust me, I'll pick it out for you. Take it after I select it, pay whenever it's convenient. If anything's wrong, full refund."
The old lady was shocked: "There's such a thing?"
"Business isn't a one-time deal. You rest easy, I'll be diligent."
Later she became a regular customer and introduced all her neighbors. The less he rushed for returns, the steadier the business grew. The small shop became Fat Donglai.
Real ability isn't about quick returns; it's about being able to hold steady. Given time, things naturally happen.
The best way to live is to become water:
Flowing downward, so you don't compete;
Spreading wide, so you don't cling;
Sitting deep and still, so you don't anxiously rush.
Enlightenment isn't gaining something; it's letting something go.
Let go of the self that loves to argue, and you've already won.
