The Wall Street Journal quoted U.S. officials as reporting that the U.S. Department of Defense is dispatching three warships to the Middle East and deploying thousands of Marines.

The report states that approximately 2,200 to 2,500 Marines from the California-based USS Boxer amphibious readiness group and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit are heading to U.S. Central Command, which oversees all U.S. forces in the Middle East.

Earlier, Reuters also cited sources indicating that Washington is sending thousands of Marines and sailors to the Middle East. One official said the USS Boxer, carrying the Marine Expeditionary Unit, departed the U.S. West Coast about three weeks earlier than planned, but did not disclose the specific mission of the additional forces.
