Two-dollar ride discount plan adjusted to "two dollar, twenty percent off" starting April 3rd
The government announced that starting April 3, the Public Transport Fare Discount Scheme for eligible seniors and persons with disabilities (the dual discount scheme) will be adjusted from a uniform fare to “two dollars at 20% off,” meaning that for adult fares at or below HKD 10, beneficiaries will continue to pay HKD 2, while for fares above HKD 10, beneficiaries will pay 20% of the adult fare. The same applies to transfer trips.
The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Ms. Sun Yuk Han, stated that the dual discount scheme aims to encourage seniors and eligible persons with disabilities to participate in community activities, thereby fostering a caring and inclusive society. The “two dollars at 20% off” plan preserves the original policy intent and balances improving the scheme’s sustainability with minimizing the impact on beneficiaries.
After implementing the “two dollars at 20% off” arrangement, the eligible beneficiaries under the dual discount scheme remain unchanged. Qualified beneficiaries can continue to enjoy fare discounts using the Lok Yu card or the “Disability Status” personal Octopus card.
The government will launch a series of publicity campaigns to inform eligible beneficiaries about the “two dollars at 20% off” arrangement, including TV promotional videos, radio broadcasts, posters and leaflets in major public transport networks and areas serving seniors and persons with disabilities, and advertisements displayed on public transport.
