Satoshi Nakamoto's extraordinary fortune catapults him to 12th rank among world billionaires
Satoshi Nakamoto’s position on the list of the world’s wealthiest illustrates the spectacular impact of Bitcoin on the global economy. In 2024, the anonymous creator of the world’s largest cryptocurrency has solidified his status as a major figure among ultra-billionaires, surpassing iconic personalities in the tech industry and global commerce.
Bitcoin holdings from the network’s inception
According to Arkham, one of the largest blockchain analysis firms, Satoshi Nakamoto owns approximately 1.1 million Bitcoin. This massive amount is spread across about 22,000 distinct addresses on the blockchain. The accumulation of this wealth dates back to the early days of the Bitcoin network, between 2009 and 2011, when Satoshi was the primary validator of the system. During this pioneering period, the creator was the only participant able to validate transactions and receive all mining rewards, allowing him to gradually amass this digital treasure of unimaginable value at the time.
This Bitcoin ownership represents more than just asset accumulation: it reflects Satoshi’s fundamental role in creating a decentralized monetary infrastructure that has revolutionized global finance.
A volatile fortune reaching unprecedented heights
When Bitcoin hit an all-time high of $126,080, Satoshi’s wealth was estimated at around $117 billion. This remarkable appreciation places the anonymous creator at 12th position on Forbes’ list of the world’s wealthiest.
To put this meteoric rise into perspective: at the beginning of 2024, Satoshi’s fortune was estimated at about $50 billion, placing him around 30th. This spectacular growth in less than a year demonstrates both the extreme volatility and the growth potential of the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Surpassing tech and business giants
This new position allows Satoshi Nakamoto to outpace several major figures in the global economy. The Bitcoin creator now surpasses Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, whose fortune is estimated at around $107 billion. Beyond this symbolic comparison, Satoshi has also overtaken other renowned magnates: Jim Walton and Rob Walton, heirs of Walmart, with respective fortunes of $111 billion and $113 billion, as well as Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, with assets around $115 billion.
This achievement is particularly significant: for the first time, a central figure in the cryptocurrency revolution surpasses in wealth some of the key architects of the contemporary tech economy.
A redefined hierarchy of ultra-billionaires
Despite this impressive rise, Satoshi Nakamoto remains behind some major figures in global wealth. Spanish businessman Amancio Ortega, founder and owner of Inditex, still holds a lead with an estimated fortune of $119 billion. The Inditex group, which includes prestigious brands like Zara and Massimo Dutti, has built an empire over decades.
This proximity between Satoshi Nakamoto’s wealth and that of traditional business magnates symbolizes a fundamental shift in the 21st-century digital economy, where digital assets and decentralized infrastructures are gaining value and recognition comparable to historic commercial empires.
