The Hang Seng Index opened down 488 points, at 24,789, then extended losses. The half-day drop was 875 points, closing at 24,402, with a turnover of HKD 192.38 billion. The Tech Index fell 3.1%, at 4,721 points.

HSBC (00005) and Standard Chartered (02888) both declined 4%. AIA (01299) dropped 7%. ATM stocks fell nearly 2% to over 3%. PetroChina (00857) declined 0.9%, CNOOC (00883) softened 0.5% after hitting a high. BYD (01211) rose 0.7% against the trend. Geely (00175) increased 4%.
