Hong Kong Cryptocurrency Fraud: Record Broken in 2025, 3.7 Million Hong Kong Dollars in Losses
Cryptocurrency scams in Hong Kong reached alarming levels in 2025. Data released by the Hong Kong Police reveal a disturbing trend in online shopping fraud. This report serves as a critical warning for investors and cryptocurrency users.
8.2% Increase in Online Fraud Cases
In February 2025, according to the Hong Kong Police, there was a significant rise in online shopping fraud incidents. Since the beginning of the year, 12,505 fraud cases have been reported, representing an 8.2% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
These statistics highlight how vulnerable users are in digital environments. Especially individuals involved in cryptocurrency transactions are at higher risk than those engaging in traditional investments.
Fake Customer Service Scams in Cryptocurrency Transactions
The largest single loss event in Hong Kong cryptocurrency scams involved the exploitation of the Telegram platform. Scammers carried out a professional operation:
Victims joined a crypto trading group and were contacted via fake support staff through private messages. These imposters requested a “verification code” to confirm group membership. Users trusting their instincts shared these codes, allowing scammers to access their Telegram-linked crypto wallets.
As a result, all digital assets in the victims’ wallets were compromised, leading to a total loss of 3.7 million Hong Kong dollars. This is the highest loss recorded from a single online scam in 2025.
How to Protect Yourself from Cryptocurrency Scams in Hong Kong
Users can take simple yet effective steps to protect themselves during cryptocurrency transactions:
Never Share Verification Codes: No legitimate customer support team will ask for verification codes. These codes should remain private and confidential.
Verify Through Official Channels: Before responding to requests from groups or private messages, contact the platform through its official website.
Check Wallet Security: Regularly review connected apps and access permissions. Immediately remove suspicious links.
The rise of cryptocurrency scams in Hong Kong underscores the importance of digital awareness. By following these steps, you can avoid becoming another potential victim in 2025.
