Arm Introduces New Chip Designed for Agentic AI
Arm Holdings ARM -2.38% ▼ has introduced a new AI data center chip called the AGI CPU. Interestingly, the chip is designed to support a newer type of AI, often called “agentic AI,” which can take actions on behalf of users with minimal input, rather than just responding like a chatbot. Importantly, this launch is a big change for Arm’s business model.

Traditionally, the company has made money by licensing its chip designs to companies like Nvidia NVDA +0.05% ▲ and earning royalties on each unit sold. However, Arm is now moving into building its own chips, which requires significant investment but could unlock much larger revenue opportunities. CEO Rene Haas described this as a key turning point for the company. The AGI CPU is the first product under this new approach, and Arm plans to release additional designs every 12 to 18 months.
Arm is also working with several major partners to bring this chip to market. The chip is expected to enter full production in the second half of the year. In addition, Arm is collaborating with server makers like Lenovo LNVGY +1.55% ▲ and Quanta to deliver complete systems.
