According to Xinhua News Agency in Washington on March 23, the U.S. Marine Expeditionary Unit 31 and its amphibious assault ships will arrive in the Middle East on the 27th. The report notes that this date coincides with the final deadline set by President Trump for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz. Citing two U.S. officials, the report states that the amphibious assault ship USS New Orleans, the amphibious assault ship USS Lorrain, and over 2,000 members of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit will enter the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility on the 27th, but it will take a few more days to reach the Strait of Hormuz. According to the U.S. Naval Institute News on the 23rd, the USS Lorrain is currently docked at Diego Garcia in the central Indian Ocean. On the 21st, Trump posted on social media threatening Iran, demanding that Iran open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours or face destruction of its power plants. On the 23rd, he again posted on social media saying that the U.S. and Iran had conducted “very good and productive” talks over the past two days, and that the U.S. would “delay the airstrikes on Iran’s power plants and energy infrastructure by 5 days.” The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that there are no negotiations between Iran and the U.S. at this time.
