Iran Says Non-Combatant Countries Must Coordinate Before Transiting Strait of Hormuz
People’s Financial News, March 23 — The Iranian Defense Council issued a statement on the 23rd local time, stating that ships from non-belligerent countries wishing to pass through the Strait of Hormuz must coordinate with Iran. The statement also emphasized Iran’s commitment to “reciprocal retaliation,” but also promised to respond “immediately and destructively” to attacks on power plants and energy infrastructure. The Iranian Defense Council further stated that attacking Iran’s coast or islands would cut off the Gulf region’s shipping lanes and communication lines, and could lead to the laying of mines in the area, including along Iran’s coast.
