The Ray Trapani Story: Netflix Shows Crypto Fraud in the Documentary Bitconned

In January 2024, Netflix launched the documentary Bitconned, highlighting one of the biggest scams in the cryptocurrency world. The production centers around Ray Trapani, whose rise and fall are closely linked to the Centra Tech crypto scandal. Ray Trapani’s story is more than just a warning—it’s a lesson on how ambitious criminals can defraud millions in an unregulated financial environment.

How Ray Trapani Built the Centra Tech Scam

The story begins in 2017, amid the Bitcoin boom, when Ray Trapani co-founded Centra Tech with Sohrab “Sam” Sharma and Robert Farkas. The trio promised investors a revolutionary cryptocurrency debit card. But behind the shiny facade was a carefully planned scheme to deceive investors.

The business model was insidious: Trapani and his partners created an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) to attract unwitting investors. The result was impressive—yet not in a positive way: they raised a staggering $25 million. To do this, they used fake materials and misleading information designed to systematically lure people into investing.

Trapani later openly admitted his role: he had always been interested in illegal ways of making money. Court records show he faced ten different charges—including criminal conspiracy, financial fraud, weapons possession, and drug offenses. Trapani was ultimately sentenced to prison and ordered to pay back $2,608,869. His partners fared no better: Sharma was required to repay $37,701,966.

Netflix Documentary Bitconned Directed by Bryan Storkel

Director Bryan Storkel, known for his production The Legend of Cocaine Island, directed Bitconned, offering a “ruthless” perspective on the crypto world. The film not only documents the dry facts of the case—it explores the psychology behind the scam, the greed, and the recklessness that drove Ray Trapani.

The Netflix documentary went online on January 1, 2024, quickly reaching millions of viewers. Storkel managed to turn a police report into a compelling story: he had Trapani himself recount his schemes, revealing the dark side of the crypto scene. The film shows how easy it was in this unregulated industry to abuse trust and forge investments.

From Centra Tech to SafeMoon: The Pattern of Crypto Frauds

Ray Trapani’s case is not an isolated incident. Bitconned was released at a time when the crypto world was already plagued by new scandals. For example, the SafeMoon project filed for bankruptcy while the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) investigated the team. Notably, the U.S. Department of Justice arrested team members on suspicion of fraud.

These developments ultimately led to the creation of a new task force, Darknet Marketplace and Digital Currency Crimes (DNMDCC), in June 2023. Its goal was to target crypto scams specifically. U.S. authorities recognized that cases like Trapani and Centra Tech were not random—they were symptoms of an industry in urgent need of regulation.

Ray Trapani remains a cautionary example in the crypto world: an ambitious scammer who thought he could get away with it in a wild financial landscape. Netflix’s Bitconned shows that justice always prevails in the end—and that every sophisticated scam will eventually be uncovered.
