Zuckerberg's AI Glasses Ambitions Thwarted: New Display Glasses Excluded from EU Market
Mark Zuckerberg wears Meta’s new glasses
Phoenix Technology News, March 25 (Beijing time), according to Bloomberg, Meta’s efforts to launch a new pair of Ray-Ban AI smart glasses with displays in the European Union have faced obstacles. In addition to supply restrictions, the glasses also face hurdles from EU regulations on batteries and AI.
Currently, this new pair of glasses is only sold in the U.S. Sources say Meta hopes to launch it in the EU but has been unable to secure enough supply. Other reasons for the delay in EU markets include local regulations on AI features and batteries.
According to EU regulations, devices sold in the region must have removable batteries by 2027, posing a challenge for manufacturers trying to pack as many features and electronic components as possible into their devices. Designing removable battery covers takes up extra space, which may shorten battery life or force manufacturers to make compromises elsewhere.
Sources say Meta is in discussions with the EU regarding battery regulations and is seeking exemptions for its own and other companies’ smart glasses. This issue was revealed this week when U.S. Ambassador to the EU Andrew Puzder stated at an event that the new glasses will not be launched in the EU.
Meta representatives referenced a blog post from January, in which Meta stated that its display glasses had very limited inventory, delaying expansion into markets in the UK, France, Italy, and Canada, and that the company would focus on processing orders in the U.S. (Author: Xiao Yu)
