China’s modernization is “open-source” modernization, says expert

BOAO, March 24 (Xinhua) — Zheng Yongnian, Dean of the School of Public Policy at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), former Dean of the Qianhai Institute of International Affairs, and Chairman of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Research Institute, stated at the Boao Asia Forum 2026 Annual Conference on March 24 that Chinese-style modernization is an “open-source” modernization.

Zheng Yongnian said that a very important indicator of Chinese-style modernization is common prosperity. Applying this development concept to the international level means that when one country or a part of the population becomes increasingly wealthy, but many others do not have this opportunity, the world becomes unbalanced and insufficient.

Zheng Yongnian believes that Chinese-style modernization is “open-source” modernization.

On March 24, at the “China Economic Outlook: Focusing on High-Quality Development” sub-forum of the Boao Asia Forum 2026 Annual Conference, Zheng Yongnian, Dean of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) School of Public Policy, former Dean of the Qianhai Institute of International Affairs, and Chairman of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Research Institute, was invited to speak. China News Service reporter Tian Yuhao took the photo.

He stated that in the past, some Western countries, after developing, would remove the “ladder” they used to climb up and prevent other countries from developing. Now, China develops itself and then extends the “ladder,” allowing, encouraging, and helping other countries to achieve development and modernization.

Zheng Yongnian believes that Chinese-style modernization can make global development more sustainable and fair. For example, after increasing capacity, China helps build infrastructure in countries along the Belt and Road Initiative, promoting local economic development.

“If we can persist in the Chinese way and work steadily over the long term, we can achieve more balanced global economic development,” Zheng Yongnian said. (End)
