Caixin: “Chinese consumers’ perception of their financial situation has actually improved.” At the 114th National Sugar and Alcoholic Beverages Fair (referred to as the “Sugar and Alcohol Fair”), NielsenIQ China Chief Operating Officer Luo Qi presented this seemingly “counterintuitive” conclusion.

Luo Qi cited survey data from Nielsen up to July 2025, stating that 41% of consumers believe their financial situation is better than the previous year, an increase of 7 percentage points compared to 34% in the same period in 2024. Meanwhile, 23% of consumers think their financial situation is worse, a decrease of 1 percentage point from 2024. Additionally, in the 2025 survey, 60% of consumers said they are more willing to spend money, up from 53% in 2024.
