The UK will intercept "shadow fleet" ships passing through its waters.
People’s Financial News, March 26 — The UK government announced on the 25th that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has approved armed forces and law enforcement to intercept ships under UK sanctions attempting to pass through its waters. This move aims to counter Russian-related activities. The UK government stated that several countries, including Finland, Sweden, and Estonia, recently conducted operations against ships suspected of belonging to Russia’s “shadow fleet” in the Baltic Sea. The UK will collaborate with “Joint Expeditionary Force” partners to intercept Russia’s “shadow fleet” and close off waters to sanctioned vessels. According to information released by the UK government, each target ship will be individually assessed before action is taken. Once ships are seized, owners, operators, and crew members may face criminal charges for violating UK sanctions laws. Currently, the UK and its allies have imposed sanctions on 544 ships of Russia’s “shadow fleet.” Western countries accuse Russia of using commercial ships like oil tankers to evade Western sanctions, referring to these vessels as the “shadow fleet.” (Xinhua)
