Abstract generation in progress

Artificial intelligence (AI) startup OpenAI announced that its ChatGPT advertising pilot program launched in the United States has generated over $100 million in annualized revenue within six weeks, reflecting strong demand for emerging advertising services. OpenAI plans to expand testing to more countries worldwide, including Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, in the coming weeks.

OpenAI stated that although about 85% of users currently qualify for ad display, fewer than 20% actually see ads daily, indicating significant growth potential for ad monetization. “We observe that consumer trust metrics remain unaffected, ad opt-out rates are low, and as we learn from feedback, the relevance of ads continues to improve.”

OpenAI expects to launch a self-serve advertising feature in April

Currently, OpenAI has partnered with over 600 advertisers, with nearly 80% being small and medium-sized businesses interested in ChatGPT ads. OpenAI plans to launch the self-serve ad platform in April to expand service coverage and drive further ad growth.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously stated in January that the company would begin showing ads to some US users within ChatGPT to enhance monetization of the AI chatbot, helping to cover high development costs. These ads will be tested with users on the free ChatGPT plan and the lower-priced GPT-3.5 plan.

Separating ads from ChatGPT-generated responses

OpenAI clarified that these ads are separate from ChatGPT responses and will not affect the output, and user conversation data will not be shared with marketers.

Meta (US: META) former advertising chief David Dugan recently joined OpenAI to lead its global advertising solutions team.
