Trump considers deploying 10,000 ground troops to the Middle East
The Pentagon is reportedly considering deploying ground forces of up to 10,000 troops to the Middle East, with deployment targets aimed at Iran’s core strongholds.
According to Xinhua News Agency, U.S. media outlet The Wall Street Journal on the 26th cited U.S. Department of Defense officials, stating that the Pentagon is considering deploying ground forces of up to 10,000 troops to the Middle East, in order to provide President Trump with more military options.
Earlier reports indicated that the Pentagon is formulating a military plan for a “final strike” against Iran, which could include the use of ground forces and large-scale bombing operations.
According to reports citing knowledgeable officials from the U.S. Department of Defense, the forces to be added this time are very likely to include infantry and armored vehicles, joining approximately 5,000 Marines previously ordered to deploy to the region and thousands of paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division.
This deployment plan has emerged at a sensitive time when the Trump administration is weighing peace negotiations with Iran, highlighting the U.S. dual-track strategy of “pressuring to negotiate,” and further increasing the uncertainty of the geopolitical situation in the Middle East.
Deployment targets aimed at Iran’s core strongholds
According to media reports, it is not yet clear where exactly in the Middle East these troops will be deployed, but their location is likely within striking distance of Iran and Kharg Island. Kharg Island is a key oil export hub near Iran’s coast, with a strategically significant position.
Trump has previously publicly stated that the Strait of Hormuz will be opened, regardless of whether U.S. allies assist.
The timing of this troop increase is particularly notable, as it coincides with the Trump administration’s parallel assessment of the possibility of peace negotiations with Iran. This “negotiating while preparing for war” posture reflects an internal tension in Washington’s Iran policy—by strengthening military presence to pressure Tehran while leaving room for diplomatic negotiations.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said, “All announcements involving troop deployments will be made by the Department of Defense. As we have said, President Trump always has all military options at his disposal.” A spokesperson for the U.S. Central Command declined to comment.
