India's Oil Company purchases Iranian liquefied petroleum gas for the first time since 2018

According to informed sources, Indian Oil Corporation has purchased liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Iran for the first time in nearly eight years. The outbreak of war in the Middle East has led to a worsening shortage of this essential cooking fuel in the country.

Sources, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the transaction, stated that the refinery will share this batch of goods with other state-owned refining companies such as Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum.

According to data intelligence firm Kpler, the last time Indian Oil Corporation purchased liquefied petroleum gas from Iran was in June 2018. This batch of goods consists of approximately 43,000 tons of butane and propane.

Liquefied petroleum gas is widely used as cooking fuel in India, and this shipment is only enough to meet the country’s demand for half a day. About two-thirds of India’s liquefied petroleum gas is imported, with 90% coming from the Middle East, primarily transported through the Strait of Hormuz, which has effectively been blocked since the outbreak of war with Iran.

Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum have not responded to emails seeking comment. Reuters previously reported that India has purchased liquefied petroleum gas from Iran for the first time in years.
