Trump reportedly hopes to "quickly" end the war with Iran
The Wall Street Journal reported on the 25th that U.S. President Trump recently told his advisors that he wants to end the war with Iran “quickly,” aiming to conclude hostilities “within the next few weeks.”
The report cites sources familiar with the matter, stating, “As the fighting continues for nearly a month, the president privately informed his advisors that he believes the conflict is in its final stages, urging them to adhere to the 4 to 6-week timeline he publicly proposed when the conflict began.”
The report mentions that Trump has told one advisor that the war is interfering with his ability to advance other priorities. Another person who recently spoke with Trump said that he seems ready to move on to the next major challenge, but did not specify what that would be.
The report states, “The problem is that Trump has no easy options for ending the war, as peace negotiations are still in their early stages. In discussions with external political allies, his attention occasionally shifts to other topics, including the upcoming midterm elections, decisions about sending immigration enforcement personnel to airports, and pushing Congress to tighten voter eligibility legislation.”
Regarding the recent U.S. troop increase in the Middle East, the report quotes U.S. officials saying that Trump is willing but will not easily deploy ground troops into Iran, partly because it may affect his goal of quickly ending the conflict. Trump is also concerned that prolonged fighting could lead to an increase in U.S. military casualties. So far, 13 American soldiers have died in this war, with nearly 300 others injured.
The report cites people close to Trump saying, “It’s generally hard to predict what decisions Trump might make regarding the war,” as he has been wavering between diplomatic negotiations and escalated strikes. “Some people around Trump are urging him to take a tougher stance, claiming that regime change in Iran could become his signature political legacy.”
Recently, Trump has insisted that the U.S. is in dialogue with Iran, a claim that Iran denies.
