Reuters reported that U.S. officials stated that Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (00981) has provided chip manufacturing equipment to the Iranian military. According to reports, officials pointed out that SMIC began shipping tools to Iran about a year ago and that “there is currently no reason to believe that these actions have stopped.” Officials added that the cooperation between the two parties “almost certainly includes technical training on semiconductor technology from SMIC.”

SMIC’s stock price fell by over 1%, hitting a low of 51.8 yuan.

According to officials, this equipment has been provided to Iran’s “military-industrial system” and can be used for any electronic devices that require chips.

SMIC has been sanctioned by the U.S. for alleged ties to the Chinese military. Since 2020, SMIC has been placed on the U.S. trade blacklist, restricting its access to American export products, but the company has always denied any connection to the Chinese military-industrial system.
