Ahead of the APEC China Summit, Singapore's former foreign minister looks forward to China's "positive energy"
[Caixin] The 2026 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit will be held in China. On March 25, former Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan stated during the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2026 that zero-sum games are spreading in many parts of the world, hoping that China, as the APEC host, will establish an optimistic tone and bring about positive-sum thinking.
In 2001 and 2014, China hosted the APEC summits in Shanghai and Beijing, respectively. Balakrishnan specifically mentioned that during the 2001 Shanghai APEC summit, the atmosphere was very tense when U.S. government officials first attended, but as dialogue began, the mood gradually eased. Now, the Asia-Pacific region is once again caught in a tense atmosphere, and it is once again China’s turn to play a role in the summit.
