[Caixin] Former Governor of the People’s Bank of China Zhou Xiaochuan stated that recent regional conflicts have intensified tensions between major powers, highlighting the need for enhanced policy coordination internationally. He expressed this view during the Bo’ao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2026 on March 25.

Zhou Xiaochuan believes that the world is in an unbalanced state in multiple aspects, including imbalances in investment and capital flows. Solving these problems requires multilateral mechanisms, rather than relying solely on bilateral or regional measures.

“The United States is indeed also under this global imbalance, but the U.S. has decided not to use the exchange rate mechanism, instead opting for tariffs to address the issue,” Zhou Xiaochuan said. “Tariffs can lead to very tricky problems.”
