Star-Hong Kong Relations | John Lee Meets Wong Chun Wai, Aims for Win-Win Dialogue and Cooperation
The Chief Executive, John Lee, met today with Singapore’s Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong, who is visiting Hong Kong. John Lee, along with the Financial Secretary Paul Chan and several Secretaries, welcomed Lawrence Wong outside Government House, where they shook hands and took photos.
John Lee stated that Hong Kong and Singapore have a long-standing friendship and many shared beliefs. Both sides advocate for free trade and multilateralism, as well as organizations based on rules, such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organization. Both parties are committed to building bridges for dialogue and cooperation, believing in win-win outcomes and expanding opportunities for all. He expressed confidence that Lawrence Wong’s visit would yield rich results.
Lawrence Wong’s concerns about Hong Kong’s 5-year plan and Northern Metropolis development
Lawrence Wong mentioned that his last official visit to Hong Kong was in 2019, and he is pleased to visit for the first time in his capacity as Prime Minister. He has previously stated his commitment to visiting Hong Kong and is eager to learn about many new developments, such as Hong Kong’s 5-year plan and the Northern Metropolis development, exploring how Singapore can participate in these development opportunities.
He also noted that while there is occasional competition between Singapore and Hong Kong, it is healthy and constructive. The two places have highly similar economic structures, financial positions, and open spirits. In the context of an increasingly fragmented world with emerging barriers, collaboration is more necessary than ever. He looks forward to closer cooperation with Hong Kong to jointly address global challenges.
