On March 25, 2026, the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2026 held a “High-Level Dialogue - Investing in the Future: Are We Ready?” Former Italian Prime Minister Gentiloni stated in his speech that competition, tensions, and even the so-called “weaponization of the global economy” have not stifled globalization, but have instead changed the trajectory of global economic relations.

Gentiloni indicated that in this changing landscape, Asian countries and Europe must join hands to protect the existing mechanisms established through multilateral means. The first thing to defend is the framework of the World Trade Organization. Because it is trade that connects us—this is true for the European Union, the reality for ASEAN, and also the reality for China.

To this end, Gentiloni called for Europe to make changes. He stated that if Europe wants to become stronger and possess greater geopolitical power, it must remain open and engage in economic cooperation. At the same time, it also needs to reshape financial markets and cultivate European leaders in various fields.
