Recently, the “Key Technology Development of Steel Plates for Rare Earth Armor Protection” scientific research project applied for by Baogang Steel Technology Center has successfully passed the approval of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Science and Technology Department, receiving 1 million yuan in funding support from the 2026 Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Key R&D and Achievement Transformation Plan—Science and Technology Support for Ecological Protection and High-Quality Development in the Yellow River Basin.
It is understood that this project is jointly carried out by Baogang Steel Technology Center in cooperation with Northeast University and Inner Mongolia First Machinery Group Co., Ltd. The project focuses on the design and research of steel plate materials for rare earth armor protection, targeting harsh service conditions, and combining the “composition-process-structure-performance” integrated regulation theory to improve the ballistic resistance and service performance of steel plates. It has developed a full-process series of industrial manufacturing, high-efficiency welding, processing, and forming key application technologies for rare earth armor protection steel plates.
The research, production, and application of rare earth armor protection steel plates ensure the rational utilization and strategic reserves of national rare earth resources. At the same time, their application in military equipment and other fields can also enhance the country’s national defense strength and security capabilities.
It is understood that the Science and Technology Support for Ecological Protection and High-Quality Development in the Yellow River Basin project is a major national development strategy, aiming to focus on ecological protection and high-quality development, identify key points for technological innovation, break through technical bottlenecks, and accurately diagnose the prominent issues faced in ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin.
Next, Baogang Steel will establish a professional R&D team, strictly follow the project implementation plan to promote various key breakthroughs, focus on critical technological innovations, continue to increase scientific research investment, deepen the subdivision of rare earth steel fields, accelerate the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and strive to realize the industrial application of rare earth armor protection steel plates. They will promote more “Baogang Intelligent Manufacturing” steel products to the market, help the autonomous and high-level technological self-reliance of the autonomous region, and contribute Baogang’s strength to the domestic high-end protective materials, the high-quality development of Inner Mongolia’s rare earth industry, and ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin.
